Albania’s latest move disputed Greek sovereign borders

Diplomatic and legal sources are speaking of an attempt from Albania to dispute established borders.

 

According to a publication by Kathimerini newspaper, Tirana are disputing land borders between Greece and Albania through a diplomatic memo to Athens in which they requested a change in the hydrocarbon research program in the Ionian, claiming that Albanian sovereign waters were being violated. Now, the Albanians are also asking for the maps to land-based research in Epirus!

 

According to the publication, this political act is a high-risk diplomatic move by Albania, towards bilateral relations.

 

The same sources state, however, that the Greek government is watching the Greco-albanian relations stress without doing much about it, as well as remaining inactive during the latest bout of instability in the Western Balkans. According to estimates, all this is part of the plan of the Albanian political system to forward the idea of “Great Albania”, something which is not only insulting, but also threatens sovereign territories.

 

There is a noted possibility that this latest diplomatic move hides Turkish interests behind it. The fact that Turkey seeks a coalition with Albania against Greece is only reinforced by the fact that Erdogan met with the PDIU party during his visit to Tirana recently.
