PMP-organised protest meeting in front of Gov't House; protesters ask PM resignation

A few hundred members and supporters of the People's Movement Party (PMP) asked the resignation of Prime Minister Victor Ponta on Sunday, in a protest meeting organised in front of the Government House.

The protesters displayed placards writing: "Ponta, you don't get the idea, we are not in Korea," "Ponta ? PSD [Social Democratic Party]: unemployment and poverty for entire Romania," "Ponta, resign!."

PMP Chairman Eugen Tomac said that a prime minister accused of serious corruption deeds should understand that any extra day at the Government House generates negative effects on the country's economy, capital market and the citizens of the state.

He pointed out that three days ago he requested the authorisation for this protest meeting, but didn't receive an approval in this respect.

In another train of thought, Tomac added that he would demand the resignation of Interior Minister Gabriel Oprea, saying that some protesters were treated harshly by gendarmes.

Capital Gendarmerie spokesman Georgian Enache told AGERPRES that the protest meeting is not authorised and protesters tried to leave the Victoria Square area and gendarmes relocated the operation in order to avoid traffic jam.

He pointed out that, according to the legislation in force, the fine for an unauthorised protest meeting for the natural entity organiser ranges between 1,000 and 10,000 lei and between 500 and 5,000 lei for each participant.

He added that the Capital Gendarmerie is going to take the measures required in this case. AGERPRES
