Deputies' Chamber debates and votes on Tuesday on prosecutor general's request regarding PM Ponta

The Deputies' Chamber in a plenary session on Tuesday will debate and vote on the prosecutor general's demand regarding the draw-up of the request for opening a criminal investigation against Prime Minister Victor Ponta.

On Monday afternoon, the Prime Minister was heard on this topic in the Legal Committee of the Deputies' Chamber. At the end, Ponta pointed out that he told his jurist colleagues that the political decisions cannot be censured by a prosecutor, but only the legal decisions.

The Legal Committee drew a report recommending the rejection of the prosecutor general's demand on the criminal investigation of Victor Ponta. A number of 18 votes were cast against opening the criminal investigation. A number of 7 Deputies voted in favour and one abstention was registered.

National Liberal Party (PNL) co-chair Alina Gorghiu said that "there is nothing surprising" in the manner in which the members of the Legal Committee voted and showed that the head of Government "uses absolutely any lever to maintain his chair."

Subsequently, Prime Minister Victor Ponta said that his colleagues of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) National Executive Committee and the coalition leaders unanimously decided they want to go further and continue governance.
