Botevgrad Mayor Not Indicted, Prosecutors Say

No charges have yet been pressed against Georgi Georgiev, mayor of the town of Botevgrad in Northwestern Bulgaria, the Sofia District Prosecutor's Office has said.

A probe has been launched into allegedly flawed public procurement.

On Monday morning Georgiev was detained by Sofia police officers who escorted him to the capital.

After leaving the prosecutor's office where he had been questioned, he described the allegations of misuse of funds as "lies of a handful of municipal councilors".

Georgiev is in his third term as Botevgrad Mayor, and GERB, the party that raised him for his last mandate, said it would not back him at the next local elections this autumn.
