US Toasts Sweet Success of Romanian Entrepreneur

Romanians love sweets in general and pancakes are one of their favourites desserts. That was one reason why Alexandra Lipovan, a young woman from Satu Mare, in northern Romania, three years ago started ClaTos, a food truck from which she sells artisan-style French crepes.

The street cart has since become a beloved fixture in the picturesque town of Satu Mare, known for serving delicious treats at an affordable price. The small company employees only two people.

Small or not, the US embassy in Bucharest on Wednesday named Alexandra Lipovan as its entrepreneur of the month in June.

Lipovan's success "reminds us all that business opportunities, both big and small, are plentiful in the Romanian economy and within reach for those with the courage to pursue them," the US embassy in Romania said.

She is also being hailed also for her public committment, as she has used her business acumen to improve the lives of children cared for by social assistance programs,

As part of her humanitarian campaign, "One Crepe for One Cause," Lipovan donates every Friday's profits to the local municipality's welfare service.

Starting and developing a small business is not always an easy task in Romania. Entrepreneurs complain about the bureaucratic and legal hurdles they face when trying to register a new firm. They also say the business taxes are high, compared to many other European countries.

Romania is doing something to deal with business community's complaints, however. Parliament on Wednesday approved the changes to the new fiscal code, which include cutting VAT from 24 to 19 per cent next year. The government says the lower rate will help small businesses to create new jobs, boost disposable income and get people spending more.
