A poor and sexy vacation… Cheap travel for those who are broke! (pics)

Voluntourism

Join a program with ELIX that organizes international voluntary workcamps of short, medium and long duration in Greece and abroad. Whether its preservation of a monastery somewhere in Italy or feeding the starving children of Kenya, all you need to do is pay to get there with free food and accomodation. Chances are you’ll meet many friends along the way.

Try other Greek programs like Archelon (to save the sea turtle) or MOm and be offered free accomodation while working on a good cause.

Free camping

What could be better than starry nights by a secluded beach far from the madding crowd? All you need is a tent, sleeping bag, some sandwiches and a chilly sixpack of beer to feel like Robinson Crusoe.

Couch surfing and Home exchange

Couchsurfing and home swaps help people become immersed in new cultures. All you need to do is set up a profile on the site, chat with other couch surfers and home sharers. The only problem is that there have been tales of crime and rape.

Choose cheap destinations

Ditch Mykonos and Santorini and explore islands like Fournoi where you can easily fund a five-night stay for 160 euros (cost from Piraeus at 58 euros) or Syros (cost from Piraeus 35.90 euros return). Or better still, why leave the mainland… you can enjoy a treat of a trip to Aidipsos in Evia or Chranoi in Messinia, Peloponnese. Another tip is to ditch the hotel and stay at a room available at a camp site.

Try carpooling

Carpooling is a cheap option and highly ecological. A website aiming to facilitate the sharing of cars has opened in Greece. CLICK HERE to find someone traveling the same route.

Visit a coupon site

There are a number of coupon travel sites that offer cheap trips like Groupon, Holideals and Bonus Deals.
