First mosque of Athens to become a reality after 70 years

Seventy years ago, it was decided that a mosque would be built in Athens. After delays and setbacks, the time has come for the first mosque to be built. After five competitions, a successful bidder was finally selected in November 2013. The project, budgeted at 964,000 euros, will be constructed on a plot of land owned by the Greek Navy at the area of Eleonas, Athens. The Navy workshop building currently standing at the site will be converted.

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation has been highly critical of delays, but the Radical Left Coalition (SYRIZA) government of Alexis Tsipras promised that the mosque would be completed.
