ENFIA tax reductions to reward conscientious taxpayers

The caretaker government has submitted a plan with tax reductions for conscientious taxpayers who can pay the joint property tax (ENFIA) installments on time or in one lump sum. The interim finance minister Tryphonas Alexiadis said that “conscientiousness should finally be rewarded.” Similar plans by the previous government had been shelved despite talk of reductions of as much as 5-15%.

Alexiadis said that the ENFIA clearances will be submitted once the E1 tax statements have been completed. Finance Ministry sources estimate that this will occur during the first fortnight of October.

Radical Left Coalition (SYRIZA) deputy Gabriel Sakellaridis confirmed that there may be an extension to the imposition of property tax for real estate that Greeks own abroad. He said that the abolition of ENFIA had been one of SYRIZA’s commitments however the time to prepare for another tax to replace it had not been adequate despite the fact that SYRIZA had claimed to have a plan ready prior to the January elections. It is hoped that ENFIA would line state coffers with 2.65 billion euros.
