Russia sends troops to fight in Syria

Russian lawmakers voted unanimously to let President Vladimir Putin send Russian troops to Syria, paving the way for open Russian intervention in Syria.

However, the Kremlin said Russia will only use its air force and not ground troops.

Putin had to request parliamentary approval for any use of Russian troops abroad based on Russia’s constitution. The last time he did so was before Russia annexed Ukraine’s Crimean Peninsula in March 2014.
