Kosovo Opposition Activists Attack Police Station

Vetevendosje (Self-Determination Movement) activists clashed with police who fired tear gas to disperse them after they threw stones at the police station in Pristina on Monday night.

Some 15 people were injured during the clashes with police. Activists also set fire to two vehicles belonging to the prosecution.

Kosovo's Prime Minister Isa Mustafa on Tuesday condemned the violence, which came amid a series of protests by the opposition against Pristina's deals with Belgrade to normalise relations.

"Violence is not acceptable as a political tool," Mustafa wrote on his Facebook page.

The clashes erupted after Kosovo police arrested the vice-president of Vetevendosje, Albin Kurti, at around 9pm on the outskirts of Pristina.

Kurti was released after around two hours and joined the protestors who regrouped in front of the Kosovo parliament.

He said that the police told him he was arrested because he and other opposition MPs threw tear gas canisters in parliament on October 8 in a protest over EU-backed agreements with Serbia.

"I have nothing in writing. But they said that it was about the issue of the October 8 session," Kurti told media after the protest. 

The prosecutors' office said on Tuesday that the arrest of Kurti was part of investigations into MPs suspected of dangerous behaviour and using weapons in parliament.

"Based on the investigations, interviews were planned with the members of parliament who are under suspicion. Albin Kurti was detained last night based on the order of the Pristina Basic Prosecution," the prosecution said in a statement.

Police said on Tuesday that an arrest warrant has also been issued for another Vetevendosje MP, Albulena Krasniqi.
