Montenegro Doubts German Arrest Linked to Paris Killings

Montenegrin police confirmed on Saturday that the German police had arrested a 51-year-old old man from the capital Podgorica on November 5.

German police said they found "many machine guns, revolvers and explosives" in his vehicle.

The  Montenegrin police said the suspect was "not Muslim" and said the German police had not directly connected him with extremist Islamic organizations.

"There is no information that he could be linked to Friday's terrorist attack in Paris," the police said.

They said they had been asked some days ago to check the identity of the Montenegrin citizen who was suspected of arms trafficing in Germany.

The Montenegrin ambassador in Paris, Dragica Ponorac, told media that the French authorities had not informed her that any Montenegrin citizen was connected with the terror attacks in France.

The premier of the German region of Bavaria, Horst Seehofer, on Saturday said he suspected that the Montenegrin national arrested last week with weapons in southern Germany was linked to the Islamist terrorists who killed more than 128 people in Paris on Friday night.

"There is reason to believe that this is possibly linked," Seehofer said.

Police in Bavaria said the arrest took place on November 5 during a routine check on the motorway between Munich and Salzburg.

He was reportedly on his way to Paris, although this has not been confirmed.

The man was reportedly from Montenegro and has refused to speak in prison. He has also not hired a lawyer to defend his case.
