Romanians Impatient For Nightclub Fire Report

The final expert report into the causes of the fire at the Colectiv nightclub in the Romanian capital, which caused the death of 63 people, will be published early next month at the latest, according to the experts compiling it.

The report - which will focus on the technical circumstances of the fire - is anxiously awaited by the government and relatives of victims alike because it may reveal more about who was responsible for the October 30 tragedy.

"We need time to provide a thorough report. Spending two months on such a complex inquiry is not too much. We already collected most of the evidence, we just to reach the conclusions," the head of the INSEMEX Institute, George Gaman, said on Tuesday.

The INSEMEX report will be delievered to the General Prosecutor who will then make it public, Gaman explained.

Twenty-six people perished in the club following a fire allegedly caused by pyrotechnics set off during a heavy metal concert. The club was accused of not having a permit to hold concerts or to stage firework displays.

Around 400 people were inside the Colectiv in a space suitable for only a quarter of that number. A pillar covered with foam caught fire and the blaze quickly spread to the ceiling.

Thirty-seven more people lost their lives in the following days from burns-related injuries. Twenty-one more are still in hospital.

Prosecutors have been investigating the club's owners and the firm that set up the fireworks for the concert. Anti-corruption prosecutors have also opened an investigation into possible corruption offences that may have contributed to the disaster.
