Changes to Traffic in Downtown Sofia as Construction of Third Metro Line Begins

Temporary changes to traffic in the centre of the Bulgarian capital are in force from Wednesday as construction of the third line of the underground begins.

Between January 20 and March 31, entrance and parking in the left lane of the Patriarh Evtimiy boulevard in the section between Vasil Levski boulevard and Han Krum street and the section between Vitosha boulevard and Knyaz Boris I street is forbidden.

During the same period there will be also changes to the route of trolley bus line 7. There will be also temporary changes to the locations of some bus and trolleybus stops.

The Sofia Urban Mobility Centre assures that it has designated the new locations of the stops.

The planned length of the third line of the underground is 16 kilometres and foresees the construction of 16 stations

A total of 10.5 kilometres of the new line will be subterranean, the remaining 5.5 kilometres will be above ground.

A funding of EUR 491 M has been secured for construction of the first twelve kilometres and twelve stations.

A total of EUR 401 M are provided by the Transport Operational Programme, with the remaining coming from municipal and state funding.

Construction works of the first seven kilometres and first seven stations begins on Wednesday, including the connections with the existing two lines.

The second stage of construction is scheduled to begin at the end of the year, with the first twelve stations to be constructed by the middle of 2019.
