Romania Prosecutor General Steps Down

Romania's top prosecutor Tiberiu Nitu deposited his resignation on Tuesday, with President Klaus Iohannis expected to nominate a successor.

In a statement quoted by Agerpres, Nitu said he was taking the step to "protect the reputation of the prosecutor's office".

His name had been involved in an investigation by Romania's anti-corruption body, the National Anti-corruption Directorate (DNA), into into the illegal use of use of motorcades.

The case was initially opened against ex-Internal Affairs Minister Gabriel Oprea. According to the prosecution, Oprea used motorcades on a daily basis for both public and private affairs and provided one for Nitu, who allegedly had been enjoying the privilege since April 2014.

Nitu denies having used motorcades in an unlawful manner, adding he only used "an escort for protection".

He was to leave office in May of this year, after having served since 2013.
