Observer: Greeks pay young refugees 10 euros to have sex

The crisis deepens the despair in the “warehouse of souls” of Greece says Observer in article which describes the living conditions of hundreds of immigrants and refugees who are trapped in Greece and especially at Victoria Square, in the center of Athens.

The article written by Tracy McVeigh and Helena Smith talks about how the people who have overwhelmed Victoria Square live revealing a “dubious night-time economy” stating also that many young immigrants are paid €10 or €15 to have sex with Greeks, as teenage refugee Abdul Waris argues.

“On Saturday, as a large, middle-aged man walked his small dog, an Afghan boy pointed him out to his new friend, Abdul Waris. “He is one of them who comes here at night,” said the boy. Abdul’s eyes widened. “It’s OK. They don’t want underage – they take the young men who will go willingly to their homes and give them a shower and €10 or €15 for sex. Some go, the ones who have no money left.”

Abdul left Afghanistan two months ago trying to reach his sister Mina, who has lived in Germany for six years. His mother is dead and his father back in Kabul.

“In my country there is Daesh [Islamic State], the Taliban, bombs every day and no jobs,” he adds. “Daesh puts it out on the radio, offering money to people to join, a lot of money, and kills men who do not join. This group is just 100km from Kabul. So I escape. What can I do?” he said.

Even though, this has become the daily life for most of the refugees and immigrants who have stuck in Athens, Observer falls into the trap of populism stating among others that one of the persons who attempted to commit suicide was dead, while both of them were discharged from the hospital and are well in my health.

“It was very shocking, very sudden. They didn’t say they were going to do this – suddenly they had jumped down. One, we hear, has died. The other is in hospital still,” said Shakib Sharzai, also from Afghanistan.

Moreover, in an attempt to record the awful living conditions, Observer reports that people pour chlorine on the bread they throw out without, though, mentioning that this is a way to exterminate the rodents.
