The much anticipated .eu top-level domain in Cyrillic will be launched on 1 June, the European Registry for Internet Domain Names (EURid) has  said.

"This is a big moment for .eu as the implementation of .eu in Cyrillic shows our dedication to evolve with the industry and offer state of the art features to provide an all-inclusive and memorable customer experience", Marc Van Wesemael, the General Manager for EURid, said in a statement on Wednesday.

EURid is the registry that manages the .eu country code top-level domain. A top-level domain is what comes after the last dot in a website or email address, for example .bg for Bulgaria.

"The implementation of .eu in Cyrillic is a huge step for .eu, specifically with regards to our vision to supply users, living or working within the EU and/or EEA, with a platform on which they can establish their unique online identity," EURid External Relations Manager, Giovanni Seppia, commented in the statement.

The launch of a top-level domain in Cyrillic means that users will be able to register a domain name in Cyrillic under a Cyrillic extension, Seppia added.
