Serbia Goes to Polls in Series of Elections

Voters in Serbia on Sunday choose new national and provincial parliaments as well as the largest number of local asemblies.

In the parliamentary elections, 20 political lists with a total of 3,270 candidates will be competing for 250 seats.

Some 15 election lists are taking part in the race for 120 seats in the assembly of the autonomous northern province of Vojvodina.

A total of 6,771.497 voters are eligible to cast ballots at 8,378 polling stations in Serbia.

Votes for the Serbian elections will be collected at 90 polling stations in Kosovo, the former province of Serbia's whose independence, proclaimed in 2008, Serbia does not recognise. They will be collected by the OSCE.

Serbian citizens living in Britain, Canada and the United States voted on Saturday, while voting in Austria, Belgium, Bosnia, Italy, South Africa, Macedonia, Romania, Russia, Germany, Slovakia, Slovenia, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, France, the Netherlands, Croatia, Montenegro, the Czech Republic and Switzerland is on Sunday.

The results of votes at polling stations abroad must not be publicly disclosed until voting in Serbia itself has finished.

Serbia will know the official results of the elections no later than 28 April, when they will be published by the Electoral Commission, RIK.

The ruling Serbia Progressive Party under Aleksandar Vucic called early parliamentary elections seeking a fresh a mandate to continue Serbia on its EU path.

Critics claim the Progressives just want to extend their power for another four years and take over the opposition bastion of Vojvodina and other municipalities.

Polls suggest that the Progressive Party will win the election hands down.
