The two candidates in Austria's presidential elections are running neck and neck in the second round of the vote held on Sunday.

Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) candidate Norbert Hofer and former Green Party leader Alexander van der Bellen are both supported by around 50% of voters, according to a public TV projection cited by daily Der Standard.

Interior Ministry estimates, which represent the final count of votes at polling stations, suggest Hofer leads on Van der Bellen by 3.8%, with support for the far-right candidate at 51.9%. The data does not include results from people who voted by post which are yet to be processed.

A final result is not expected before early Monday.

If Hofer keeps his lead after votes by post are included, it will be the first case of a far-right head of state elected in the European Union since the end of World War Two in 1945.
