Earthquake near Sandanski Jolts Southwestern Bulgaria

An earghquake measuring 4.5 on the Richter scale shook southwestern Bulgaria on Sunday.

The epicenter of the tremor was 5 km northeast of Sandanski and 121 km south of Sofia at a depth of 8 km, according to initial information from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).

The earthquake struck at 1158 a.m. (0858 GMT) on Sunday.

Bulgaria's National Institute of Geophysics, Geodesy and Geography (NIGGG) put the magnitude of the tremor at 4.3 and the depth at 3.7 km. 

An aftershock with magnitude of 3.2 on the Richter scale was registered 15 km east of Sandanski at 1210 p.m. (0910 GMT), according to NIGGG.
