Tempest stuns western Crete

Flights were canceled and trees uprooted on Monday in western Crete after it was hit by a violent storm that caused torrential rain and floods in the wider region of Hania, including the villages of Askifou, Sfakia and Falasarna and the Samaria Gorge.

According to the National Observatory of Athens, wind speeds reached 85 kilometers per hour, grounding flights to and from Hania International Airport.

Storms also struck the southern Peloponnese, with heavy rains affecting Cape Malia and the town of Monemvasia, while the National Meteorological Service (EMY) station on the island of Antikythira recorded wind speeds of up to 100 kilometers per hour.
