Paris Environmental Agreement Enters Into Force

The Paris Environmental Agreement entered into force officially on Friday, reported Reuters, cited by BTA.

This will put pressure on nearly 200 countries to start reducing greenhouse gases emissions.

The agreement is aimed at keeping the increase in global average temperature to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels.

The agreement was supposed to come into force after being ratified by 55 countries which are responsible for 55% of global greenhouse gases emissions - a condition that was fulfilled.

The USA, China, India - three of the countries with some of the highest emissions - have ratified the agreement. So has the EU.

A few days before the agreement entered into force, however, the UN forecast that, by 2030, greenhouses gases emissions will be 12-14 billion tones above the level necessary to limit global warming as per Paris Agreement stipulations.
