Greek Union of Civil Servants Goes on Strike
Social tension in Greece is growing. The Union of Civil Servants (ADEDY), organiser of the 24-hour nationwide strike, insists on a suspension of the practice of part-time employment and the annulment of all laws leading to drastic cuts in wages.
Ferryboats and cargo ships are not operating. Sailors blocked the ports in protest against the privatization of Greek ports.
All government offices are closed. Hospitals admit only emergency cases and medical staff protested against the shortage of doctors and insufficient resources for healthcare.
Mass demonstrations are being held in Athens and Thessaloniki. Students, pensioners, farmers and teachers also joined the protests in support of civil servants.
At the same time, the government in Athens refused to accept the new measures of creditors and threatened that they will resign and call snap parliamentary elections.
