Menduh Thaci Quits as Macedonia Party Chief

Thaci announced his irrevocable resignation on Thursday on Facebook, but did not specify what the reasons for his decision were and whether the bad election results played a role.

"Dear friends. I have just submitted an irrevocable resignation from the post as party president," Thaci wrote.

He said the DPA would be managed by the party's governing council until a new extraordinary congress is called whose date will be determined.

"The coordinator of all the activities will be the party's secretary general, Azem Sadiku, while I will remain committed to the party," Thaci wrote.

His resignation comes after the DPA won only two of parliament 120 seats seats in the December 11 elections - the lowest score ever. In the 2014 general elections the DPA won seven seats.

Over the past few years the party has been plagued by quarrels which resulted in splits among the members and the formation of a new party, DPA - Movement for Reforms. Led by a former DPA MP, Zijadin Sela, this party won three seats in these elections.

Thaci was at the helm of the DPA since 2007 when his predecessor, late Arben Xhaferi stepped down from that post.
