One person was killed and 20 others were injured on April 9 when a hot air balloon crashed in the touristic Cappadocia region of the Central Anatolian province of Nevşehir, Doğan News Agency has reported.

The hot air balloon, which took off from the Göreme area in the early hours of the morning, hit a high-voltage transmission line during its descent due to winds in the Ortahisar area before making a hard landing.

A French tourist, V.C., died at the scene while another 20 were wounded in the accident.

A police source in Nevşehir told the Sputnik news site that 16 of the injured were Turks, two were French and two were Colombians.

The wounded were taken to hospitals in the province. Most of them were later discharged while some suffered fractures, the agency said.

Cappadocia is visited by around 2.5 million domestic and foreign tourists every year, with around a fifth of these visitors taking balloon flights over the stunning landscape during their trip. However, bad weather conditions have led to a number of accidents in the region.

In February, Danish tourist Benny Jensen was killed as the hot air balloon in which he had gone sightseeing made a heavy landing amid strong winds.
