40 pct of deaths caused by diseases of circulatory system in 2016: Turkish Statistics Institute

Almost two-fifths of Turks who died in 2016 perished due to diseases of the circulatory system, according to a study by the Turkish Statistics Institute (TÜİK).

Some 39.8 percent of the 408,782 deaths in 2016 occurred due to circulatory diseases, followed by cancer at 19.7 percent and respiratory diseases at 11.9 percent.

Among deaths due to circulatory system diseases, 40.5 percent stemmed from ischaemic heart diseases while 23.6 percent were due to cerebrovascular disease.

Most of the deaths from cancer were due to malignant tumors in the larynx and trachea, bronchus or lung.

Some 78,931 died due to malignant tumors in 2016. Some 31.1 percent of the deaths were caused by cancer of the larynx and trachea, bronchus or lung, according to TÜİK.

Diseases of the circulatory system were mostly seen in the 75-84 age group, while cancer was mostly seen in the 65-74 age group in 2016.

The province in which the mortality rate from circulatory diseases was highest was the northern province of Amasya, in which 50.8 percent of all deaths occurred due to the disease. Amasya was followed by the northwestern province of Sakarya (49.2 percent), the Aegean province of Aydın (48.7 percent), the Central Anatolian province of Yozgat (48 percent) and the Aegean province of Denizli (47.7 percent).

In terms of percentage of deaths caused by cancer, the northwestern province of Tekirdağ led the way with 24.1 percent, followed by Istanbul (23.8 percent) and the northwestern province of Kırklareli, the Central Anatolian province of Eskişehir and the eastern province of Van all totaling 23.3 percent.
