Croatian Taxi Drivers Block Airports in Anti-Uber Protest

Croatian taxi drivers blocked roads and hindered access to airports in Zagreb, Split and Dubrovnik on Friday, causing maximum inconvenience at the peak of the touristic season.

Although they claim the blockades are not a formal protest, taxi drivers say the action is designed to raise public awareness about the problem of drivers working through the US-made cell phone app Uber, who the taxi drivers claim are conducting business illegally.

Taxi drivers staged a similar "spontaneous gathering" in Zagreb in June. The country's Maritime, Transport and Infrastructure Ministry filed a proposal in late July, asking for the ban on Uber.
