A tricky game

The leftist-led government has decided to go ahead and swallow the bitter pill of foreclosures and changes to legislation governing labor unions. Both of these are leading symbols of the anti-systemic movement that gave rise to ruling SYRIZA and therefore make this new resolve extremely significant.

It could, in fact, even act as a springboard for growth by creating the right climate. For this to happen, however, the government must also stop with the extreme populist rhetoric and attacks on imagined enemies.

The problem is that the populism and the enemies are all necessary for the leftists to maintain their ideological profile, but if they continue playing both sides, they will end up having to pay for their unpopular decisions without enjoying any of the benefits.
