Boy loses fingers in firecracker incident

A 13-year-old boy from the vicinity of the town of Loznica in western Serbia was seriously injured when a firecracker exploded in his hand.

Blic is reporting that the local hospital confirmed the boy, whose initials are M.S., has had two fingers on one hand amputated due to the extent of the injury. The doctors said they managed to save a third finger.

In late November, Interior Ministry State Secretary Biljana Popovic-Ivkovic said the law would be amended to increase fines for the use of pyrotechnics from RSD 10,000-50,000 to RSD 50,000-100,000.

When it comes to minors, she said at the time, their parents and guardians will be held responsible. They will either pay the fines or do between 40 and 120 hours of community service, Popovic-Ivkovic said during a presentation of MUP's campaign dubbed "Firecrackers are not toys."
