DefMin Fifor presents Romania's defence priorities at Munich Security Conference

National Defence Minister Mihai Fifor carried out on Friday a series of bilateral meetings, in which he presented Romania's priorities in terms of defence, on the occasion of participating in the Munich Security Conference, a release of the National Defence Ministry (MApN) informs.

According to the quoted source, within the bilateral meeting with the chair of the US Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, Senator Ron Johnson, the discussions mainly focused on the relations between Romanian and the US, with an emphasis on the cooperation inside the North Atlantic Alliance.

On this occasion, Defence Minister Fifor evoked the very good talks that he carried out with US Secretary of Defence James Mattis at the recent ministerial meeting of NATO in Brussels and assured the US partner that Romania continues the commitments it took on as member of the Alliance, but also inside the Strategic Partnership between the two countries.

Within the bilateral meeting with representatives of the Atlantic Council, namely general James Jones and Alexander Vershbow, Minister Mihai Fifor underscored the importance of security in the Black Sea region for the agenda of the future NATO Summit, in July 2018 in Brussels.

Moreover, also discussed was the relevance of the high level meeting, in the Three Seas Initiative format, that will be hosted this year by Romania in Bucharest.

"On this occasion, Minister Fifor reiterated the assessments of the Romanian side regarding the security developments in the extended region of the Black Sea, as well as Romania's efforts in terms of strengthening the deterrence and defence posture, as a state in the Eastern flank of the Alliance, in accordance with the political decisions at NATO level," the release informs.
