ForMin Melescanu attends opening of Honorary Consulate in Split, Croatia

Foreign Affairs Minister Teodor Melescanu attended on Thursday, on the first day of his official visit to the Republic of Croatia, the opening of the Honorary Consulate in Split, underscoring on this occasion that one of the main tasks of the new office is granting support to the Romanian community on a local level and to the Romanian citizens who are visiting Croatia.

According to a release of the Foreign Affairs Ministry (MAE), in the speech that Foreign Minister Melescanu delivered on this occasion, he referred to "the wonderful bridges between the two states, represented by the Croatian community of Romania and the Romanian and Romanic language speaker communities of Croatia." He mentioned the growing number of Romanian tourists visiting Croatia, Split city and his surroundings, a region that has become a favourite destination among them.

The head of the Romanian diplomacy underscored that the opening of the Honorary Consulate will offer new opportunities for intensifying and diversifying the bilateral relations, one of the main tasks of the new office consisting of granting support to the Romanian community on a local level and to the Romanian citizens who are visiting Croatia, the MAE informs.

Also attending the opening of the Honorary Consulate were representatives of Croatia's Foreign Affairs and European Ministry, Croatian central authorities, as well as representatives of Split - Dalmatia County, of the business milieu and members of the Romanian community residing in the region. Romania's New Honorary Consul in Split is Stepan Roglic, who is a Croatian businessman, the MAE mentions.

On Thursday also, within the meeting of Foreign Minister Melescanu with President of Croatian Chamber of Economy Luka Burilovic and members of the Chamber leadership, the very good bilateral relations were underlined, but also the possibility to boost cooperation in areas in which there is still an important unexplored potential.

"It was underscored the necessity to identify and develop some joint projects in areas of shared interest such as energy, infrastructure, transport, tourism, agriculture. It was voiced the hope that the cooperation Memorandum between Romania's Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Croatia's Economy Chamber, signed in June 2017, will contribute to intensifying cooperation between Romanian and Croatian businessmen. The two officials underscored the existing cooperation possibilities within the European Union's Strategy for the Danube Region," the MAE informs.
