A large-scale study involving Bulgarian scientists could influence the cancer treatment process. An international team of scientists from Bulgaria, Germany and the United States unveils the dynamics of 70 key proteins involved in the DNA repair. This provides a platform for fundamental research of the process and effect of anticancer drugs.

The discovery does not mean that we can cure cancer, Prof. Stoyno Stoynev from the Bulgarian Institute of Molecular Biology explained.

What we can do is to understand for what kind of cancer some anti-cancer drugs can be used, we can help make them better because we can direct the researchers who produce these anticancer drugs in terms of how they can get better, Prof. Stoynev added.

He further explained that so far the team had studied 70 proteins, but there were more than 200 known and not so known proteins that take part in the DNA repair process.
