Code orange of floods warning issued for Danube River, in place until April 6

Hydrologists issued on Monday a code orange warning of flood valid until April 6 for the Danube River both downstream, the Calafat-Oltenita portion, as well as the Cernavoda-Galati portion and the Danube Delta.

According to the National Institute of Hydrology and Water Management (INHGA), between March 26, 15:00 -April 4, 16:00 the flow of the Danube on its downstream portion from Calafat to Oltenita, comprising the counties of Dolj, Olt, Teleorman, Giurgiu and Calarasi, is expected to exceed the flood levels.

The same extreme hydrological phenomena should be expected between March 26, 15:00 - April 6, 16:00, on the Cernavoda-Galati portion, as well as in the Danube Delta (the counties of Constanta, Braila, Tulcea and Galati).

According to INHGA, a code yellow for floods, valid until April 6, at 16:00, will take effect all Monday afternoon, all across the Romanian Danube sector downstream of the Iron Gates hydropower works (included counties: Mehedinti, Dolj, Olt, Teleorman, Giurgiu, Calarasi, Ialomita, Braila, Galati, Constanta and Tulcea).

Hydrologists point out that portion of the Danube downstream Gruia is protected against flooding by embankment works.

Based on latest information no special problems due to the flood propagation on the Romanian Danube sector are yet forecast, but careful monitoring of the hydro-meteorological developments and the behaviour of the water engineering works designed to protect against flooding is necessary.

The Hydrological warnings were sent to the Ministry of Environment, Waters and Forestry; General Emergency Inspectorate; the Romanian Waters National Corporation; the Ministry of Administration and Interior; the media; S.C. Hidroelectrica S.A. the Banat, Jiu, Olt, Arges -Vedea, Buzau-Ialomita, Siret, Prut-Barlad and Dobrogea-Litoral river basin administrations.
