Romanian pupils win six medals in the Balkan Mathematical Olympiad for seniors 2018

Romania's mathematics team won six medals (four golden and two silver) in the 25th edition of the Balkan Mathematical Olympiad for seniors, carried out in Belgrade over may 7-12, informs the Ministry of Education in a press release.

Also a gold medallist in the 2016 and 2017 editions of the Balkan Olympiad, Mircea Ciprian Bonciocat (National College "Tudor Vianu" in Bucharest) repeated his performance, by succeeding a maximum score again (40 points). The same score was obtained by Edis Memis (Theoretical High School of Computer Sciences in Constanta), Mihnea Gabriel Doica (silver medallist last year) and Leon-Roland Balan-Tribus (both pupils from the International Computer Science High School in Bucharest), all three winning gold medals.

The bronze medals belonged to Sergiu-Ionut Novac (National College "C. Brediceanu" from Lugoj) and Ioan-Andrei Nicolae ( Computer Science High School in Bucharest). In the unofficial ranking by medals, Romania ranked 1st among the participant countries.

Romania's team was coordinated by university lecturer Catalin Gherghe (Bucharest University - Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science) alongside university lecturer Mihai Chis (West University of Timisoara) and Marius Perianu (teacher at the "Ion Minulescu" National College from Slatina).

"Participating in the 2018 edition of the Balkan Olympiad (at regional level) were teams from 17 countries (11 of them permanent participants in the Olympiad and 6 participating as guests). According to the regulations of the competition, each participant state, except for the organizer, is entitled to register a team of 6 high school pupils of up to 20 years old. The tests imply the individual solving of four geometry problems, number theory, theory of combinations and algebra, for four hours and thirty minutes," said the abovementioned source.
