Investigation of killings of journalists in Kosovo urged

The Assembly of the European Federation of Journalists (EFJ) has unanimously adopted a resolution urging investigation of killings of journalists in Kosovo.

The resolution was tabled by the Association of Journalists of Serbia (UNS), the Independent Journalists Association of Serbia (NUNS), the Union of Journalists of Serbia (SINOS) and the Association of Journalists of Kosovo (AGK).

The resolution calls for effective investigations killings and kidnapping of 14 Serbian and ethnic Albanian journalists and media workers in Kosovo in the period from 1998 to 2005, and from EU's rule of law mission in Kosovo, EULEX and the United Nations to implement the decisions of the UN Human Rights Advisory Panel to solve these cases, and compensate the victims' families.

The resolution asks for cooperation between prosecutors from Belgrade and Pristina to solve these cases, and for the mandate of the Specialist Chambers in Kosovo to include the cases of murdered and kidnapped journalists and media workers. It also calls for a commission that would investigate these killings and kidnappings to be set up in Pristina, and have journalists among its members.

At the conference, on behalf of the UNS, the data on the cases of murdered and kidnapped journalists was presented by Muharem Bazdulj, who asked the EFJ delegates to adopt the resolution.

The EFJ annual meeting, held yesterday in Lisbon, Portula, was attended by delegates from 30 countries.
