Men in Bulgaria Receive 38% higher Pensions than Women

Because of the lower wages and the shorter insurance period, women in Bulgaria receive on average 38% lower pension than men. Although the retirement age in Bulgaria gradually equals, the differences will remain for both retired and future retirees, while gender pay inequalities remain.
This is stated in some of the findings of an analysis of the National Social Security Institute on the topic, quoted by Dnevnik.

The analysis indicates that the employed women dominate in sectors where the average wage is below the national average. Data from a recent survey by the National Statistical Institute, according to which over 40% of the employed women worked in manufacturing and trade, where the gross annual salary was below 90% of the national average, another 23% were employed in education, human health and social work - sectors where the salary approaches the country average.

According to data provided by the Social Security Institute in 2017, the average insured income was BGN 821.51 and the difference was 10.6% for men. The difference in the length of the insurance period is 5.6 years - men retire on average after 38.7 years of service and the women after 33.1 years. The average pension for men is 410.58 leva, and for women - 298.48 leva.

Thus, after retirement, men receive an average of 51.5% of their final salary and women only 40.9%.
