PM Dancila meets UN General Assembly President Lajcak and underscores importance of implementing 2030 Agenda

Prime Minister Viorica Dancila met on Tuesday with President of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly Miroslav Lajcak, who is paying an official visit to Romania, context in which the Romanian PM showed that the success of implementing the 2030 Agenda will contribute to the construction of a balanced society, based on inclusive principles, with the main purpose of ensuring sustainable development and significantly improving the living standard of all citizens.

According to a release of the Government, the two high officials exchanged opinions over some topical issues included on the agenda of the UN General Assembly, the most important and representative multilateral forum.

"Prime Minister Viorica Dancila referred to Romania's institutional and operational framework for enforcing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development - a global development action programme that promotes the balance between the three dimensions of sustainable development: economic, social and environmental. The head of the Executive showed that the success of the 2030 Agenda implementation will contribute to the construction of a balanced society, based on inclusive principles, with the main goal of ensuring sustainable development and the significant improvement of living standards for all citizens," the release informs.

The quoted source mentions that also discussed was the impact of climate changes, an immediate global challenge with long-term implications for the development and security of all the regions around the world, that needs a responsible approach and concrete actions at the UN level.

"The President of the United Nations General Assembly commended Romania for the presentation, scheduled to take place in July 2018, of the National Volunteer Report regarding the stage of implementation of the 2030 Agenda. Furthermore, he evoked the reform measures which he endorses at the Organisation level, in order to streamline its role in identifying some collective solutions with an impact over development, but also to respond to common security challenges," the release mentions.

Moreover, the PM reiterated Romania's firm commitment for multilateralism, a dimension in which the UN hold the central role, and guaranteed that this approach will be also endorsed when holding the Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first semester of 2019.
