Romanian pupils win seven medals at Balkan Geography Olympiad

Romania's Geography Olympic team won two gold, two silver and three bronze medals at the Balkan Geography Olympiad, which was held in Iasi between 24-29 June, thus placing Romania first in the ranking of nations.

According to a release of the National Education Ministry (MEN), the gold medals were won by Razvan Marian Popescu (10th grade, the "Sf Sava" National College of Bucharest), who matched his last year's performance, and Ioan Matei Stan (11th grade, the International Computer Science High School of Bucharest)

The silver medals went to Gabriel Alexandru Chivu (10th grade, the "Nicolae Balcescu" National College of Braila) and Andrei Stefan Micu (9th grade, "Tudor Vianu" National High School of Computer Science of Bucharest). At the same time, Delia Ioana Dumitrescu (9th grade, the "Ion Minulescu" National College of Slatina), Gabriela Diana Ionescu (9th grade, the "Sf Sava" National College of Bucharest) and Vlad Patrik Apostol (8th grade, the "Horia Hulubei" Theoretical High School of Magurele, Ilfov) secured three bronze medals.

The 4th edition of the competition was hosted for the first time by Romania, being organised by the Iasi County School Inspectorate, in partnership with the Geography Faculty, the "Al.I.Cuza" University, the Geography Society of Romania and the Iasi City Hall. A number of 50 pupils and 30 teachers (team leaders) participated in the event, as well as observers and guests from Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Moldova and Romania.

According to the competition regulations, each team is made up of 4 pupils and 2 coordinating teachers. The host-country has the right to enroll two teams in the competition. The contest included the following three events, all of them in English: theoretical, practical and multimedia.
