Fencing: Ana Maria Popescu qualifies for quarterfinals of epee individual women event; World Chamionships

Romanian Ana Maria Popescu has qualified for the quarterfinals of the epee individual women event at the World Fencing Championships currently taking place in Wuxi, China.

On the main draw, Ana Maria Popescu successfully defeated Japanese Kanna Oishi (15-9), Italian Rossella Fiamingo (15-8) and Ukrainian Joan Feybi Bejura (15-9). In the quarterfinals, the Romanian player's opponent will be Olena Krivitska, also from Ukraine. Ana Maria already has two bronze medals won in the individual event at the World Championships in 2002 and 2011.

In her turn, Maria Udrea also defeated, on the main draw, Russian Aizanat Murtazaeva (15-8) and American Kelley Hurley (13-12), before she was eliminated in the round of sixteen by Hungarian Emese Szasz-Kovacs (10-11).

Amalia Tataran was eliminated in the first round, on the main draw, by Estonian Katrina Lehis (6-15) and Raluca Sarcia lost in the first round to Polish Barbara Rutz (4-15).
