Gov't meets to analyse measures against African swine fever

The government has convened in a meeting to analyse the measures taken by the authorities against an African swine fever outbreak that affects Romania.

Attending the meeting are the ministers of agriculture, regional development, internal affairs, health, finance, economy, defence, transport, head of the Emergency Department (DSU) Raed Arafat, and representatives of the National Sanitary Veterinary and Food Safety Authority (ANSVSA).

The meeting took place as compensatory payments started to the affected farmers.

According to ANSVSA, pig farmers affected by the African swine fever have lost so far over 130,000 lei, for a price per kilogram of between 8 and 12 lei.

The government has applied additional measures to monitor, control and fight against the disease so as to prevent the spread of the virus and contain the losses generated by the outbreak.

At the same time, pieces of legislation were adopted regulating the compensation of losses incurred on pig farmers as a result of the culling of animals in actions for the rapid liquidation of the outbreaks of the disease, as well as providing financial incentives for the notification of the cases of dead wild boars and for the hunters' participation in selective hunting.

In the case of African swine fever, the use of products and by-products from slaughtered, culled or otherwise affected animals is prohibited.

ANSVSA representatives have called on citizens to immediately notify the veterinarian or the county directorate of any case of sick pigs in their household because they will be compensated for against the market value of the animals.
