PM Dancila attends opening of Romanian Embassy in Muscat

Prime Minister Viorica Dancila on Monday attended the opening ceremony of the Romanian Embassy in Muscat as part of an official visit to the Sultanate of Oman.

The opening ceremony was attended by ministers of the Omani government, representatives of the local diplomatic corps and members of the Romanian community in Oman. The attendees emphasised the importance of the moment for the bilateral relationship and its symbolic value in determining the Romanian side to have a permanent presence on the territory of the country, voicing conviction that the dialogue between Romania and Oman will be strengthened in the coming period, both politically and economically. In this respect, the meetings of the visiting Romanian delegation were mentioned, which were said to highlight the interest of both parties in the completion of sectoral co-operation projects.

The opening of the diplomatic mission in Oman is a pragmatic implementation of the actions undertaken by the government of Romania, under governing programme 2017-2020, to deepen and strengthen bilateral relations with Arab Gulf states.

Thus, the official visit of the Romanian head of the government is said to be a double first in the Romanian-Omani bilateral relations, as the opening of Romania's first diplomatic mission on the soil of Oman occurred amidst the first contact between Romania and the Sultanate of Oman at the level of the leadership of the two governments since the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries on May 1, 1974.

At the same time, the opening of the Muscat diplomatic mission, near the 45th anniversary of unbroken diplomatic ties in 2019, is a concrete way for the Romanian government to support the almost 300-strong Romanian community of Oman.
