Climber Alexandra Marcu conquers Margherita Peak (5,109m) in Uganda

Climber Alexandra Marcu and her father, Dan Marcu, managed to conquer right on the National Day of Romania the Margherita Peak (5,109 m) from Uganda, the highest of the Rwenzori Mountains and the third in Africa, according to an announcement made on the Facebook page of the young woman from Deva on Sunday.

"Seven difficult days in the jungle, swap, glacier. Mission accomplished! We celebrated the Greater Union Centennial right on December 1, at 5,109 m, on the Margherita Peak, the third peak of Africa! Happy anniversary, Romania!" Alexandra Marcu wrote on her social network's page.

The two climbers from Deva went to Uganda on November 23 with the declared intention to conquer the Margherita Peak on the occasion of the National Day of Romania.

To meet this goal in time, they had to overcome several obstacles, from crossing some swampy areas to escalating a glacier.

The Rwenzori Mountains or the Moon Mountains, as mentioned by the geographer Ptolemy - who said they were always covered with snow - are in Equatorial Africa, between Uganda and Congo. Although located only 48 km from the Equator, the highest peaks of this mountainous massif are covered by snow all the time. Margherita Peak is the highest peak in Uganda and is covered by clouds for much of the year.

The expedition of the two bold climbers from Deva was supported by the Hunedoara County Council and several sponsors, being scheduled for nine days.

Alexandra Mark is known for having managed to escalate six of the world's highest volcanoes, the first success having been accomplished when the young woman was only 14 years old. In January 2015, while only 17 years old, she was able to conquer the world's highest volcano, Ojos del Salado (6,893 meters), being the third woman in the world to successfully climb this Chilean volcano.

Alexandra Marcu is also the youngest European climber who conquered the Pico de Orizaba volcano (5,636 m) in Mexico, and the youngest Romanian to climb the Kazbek massif in Georgia.AGERPRES(RO - author: Sorin Blada, editor: Florin Marin; author: Simona Iacob, editor: Maria Voican)
