German Embassy in Bucharest asks dpa, ZDF to correct parts in story on Romania's Greater Union Centennial

The German Embassy in Bucharest says in a Facebook post that it has asked the dpa News Agency and the ZDF TV channel to correct parts in their story on Romania's Greater Union Centennial, underlining that the public accounts contradicting the fact that the modern Romanian state came into being through the unification of several regions, including Transylvania, do not match the point of view of the German federal government.

"The modern Romanian state was born 100 years ago thorough the unification of several regions, including Transylvania. We celebrated together the anniversary of this modern Romanian state on December 1. The Transylvanian Saxons also stated themselves, on their own motion, in favour of the new state at the Saxon Assembly of January 1919, in Medias. Public accounts that contradict this understanding or that may lead to erroneous interpretations do not match the point of view of the federal government. Consequently, we have requested the dpa German News Agency and the ZDF public television broadcaster a correction of those parts in their 'Rumänien feiert 100 Jahre Anschluss Siebenbürgens' published on December 1, 2018," reads the clarifications posted in Romanian on the Facebook page of the German Embassy in Bucharest.

Romania's Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday that it made a request through the Romanian Embassy in Berlin to the two editorial offices to provide the necessary clarifications and to request the correction as presenting, adding that the news story carried by the dpa News Agency and broadcast by the ZDF German public television station on the anniversary of Romania's Greater Union Centennial does not reflect historical truth, and it contains serious errors and a biased approach.
