Gov't reiterates commitment to fight against anti-Semitism

The Government reiterates the commitment for the fight against anti-Semitism and for incriminating the Holocaust denial and the instigation to anti-Semitism.

"On the occasion of the International Day of Commemoration in memory of the victims of the Holocaust (27 January), the Romanian Government pays homage to the memory of Holocaust victims. Romania's Government reiterates the commitment for the fight against anti-Semitism and for incriminating the Holocaust denial and the instigation to anti-Semitism, encouraging solidarity and the civic spirit as foundation for a democratic and modern society," reads a Government release sent to AGERPRES on Sunday.

At the same time, the release brings to mind that, in the context of holding the rotating Presidency at the EU Council, Romania's objective is cohesion of common values.

"The promotion of the efficient fight against racism, intolerance, xenophobia, populism, anti-Semitism and the discouragement of the hate speech represent some of the main themes of stimulating EU's solidarity and cohesion. Thus, Romania has recently taken important steps in the direction of commemorating the Holocaust victims and promoting education on Holocaust, on an internal level," The Government underscores.

The Executive mentions that in the period March 2016 - March 2017 Romania exercised the Presidency of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance and endorsed the adoption of the working definition of anti-Semitism.

"In June 2018, two years after the adoption of the definition, Romania's Parliament adopted a special law on combating anti-Semitism, which defines anti-Semitism and incriminates the distribution and promotion of materials with anti-Semitic content, as well as the promotion of anti-Semitic ideas, concepts or doctrines. We reiterate that promoting diversity, respect for the other, equality of chances represent essential principles for the development of a democratic society," the release also reads.
