MAE: Promoting diversity, equality of chances, fundamental principles for democratic society development

The Foreign Affairs Ministry (MAE) pays homage to the memory of the Holocaust victims worldwide and reiterates that promoting diversity, respect for the other, equality of chances represent fundamental principles for a democratic society development.

"The Romanian Foreign Affairs Ministry pays homage to the Holocaust victims worldwide and voices solidarity with the survivors of the events during WWII. The International Day of Commemoration in memory of the victims of the Holocaust represents a moment of reflection on the tragic consequences which extremist manifestations have on the values of human solidarity, democracy and the observance of the fundamental rights and freedoms. The Foreign Affairs Ministry reiterates the fact that promoting diversity, respect for the other, equality of chances represent fundamental principles for a democratic society development," reads a MAE message on the occasion of the International Day of Commemoration in memory of the victims of the Holocaust.

At the same time, MAE reaffirms the determination to further contribute, through the mechanisms of diplomacy, to the consolidation of the legislative and institutional instruments capable to prevent and sanction anti-Semitism, as well as any other racism, xenophobia, racial discrimination, intolerance and populism manifestations.

"In the context of Romania exercising the Presidency of the EU Council in the period January-June 2019, combating anti-Semitism, discrimination and hate speech represent thematic priorities, encompassed in the Europe of common values pillar. In this respect, there will be organised two conferences on the topic of combating anti-Semitism and preserving the memory of the Holocaust, in Brussels and Bucharest, in February and March 2019, respectively," the MAE release reads.

The Foreign Ministry mentions that it also marks the day of 27 January by getting involved in the World Jewish Congress' global campaign #weremember.

MAE points out that the day of 27 January 1945 represents the day of releasing the prisoners from the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp and marks the international commemoration of the Holocaust victims.
