N1 TV Station Targeted by 'Death Threat' in Serbia

N1's executive producer Igor Bozic told BIRN that the station's office in Serbia has received the latest in a series of threats targeting its journalists, and argued that Serbian politicians' anti-media statements were responsible.

"The latest threat contained the clearly expressed intention to put our lives in danger and the prosecutor's office should not have any dilemma how to assess it," Bozic said. 

N1 reported on Monday evening that the threatening letter that purported to be from a Serbian war veterans' association.

"Do you have families... you're killing our children and grandchildren, and are unaware that if the destruction happens, your building will be the first to be blown up, and you may lose your dearest. That's why we, the veterans, warn you not to play with anyone's destiny because your fate is in our hands," N1's English-language website quoted the letter as saying. 

The letter was signed "Belgrade Veterans of the 1999 war", but the head of the association with the same name denied any connections to the threat. 

Bozic said that the threat has been reported to the police, as have previous incidents.

He added that journalists in N1's Serbian office are often targeted as "traitors" and "anti-Serbs" online, and said such insults usually follow anti-media statements by state officials and ruling party politicians. 

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic on Monday accused N1 of being anti-government.

Vucic told Happy TV that "the authorities are being attacked by N1 television 24 hours a day, seven days a week, as well as by many weekly newspapers and other media". 

Bozic alleged that Vucic's statement and others like it encouraged people to threaten media outlets.
