MRDPW has Invested over BGN 75 Million in Water Supply and Sewerage Infrastructure in 4 Years

The Ministry of Regional Development and Public Works has invested over BGN 75 million in the water supply and sewerage infrastructure over the last 4 years. Over the same period over BGN 332 million were re-invested by the WSS operators themselves funds collected by their subscribers and invested back to improve the systems. The data on the volume of investments by the various regions in the country for the period 2015-2018 were submitted to MPs in response to their questions to Minister Petya Avramova, reports Darik. 

By the end of 2020, new 1.3 billion BGN will have to be invested in the sector through the Operational Program "Environment 2014-2020" for the construction of water and sewage treatment plants, reconstruction of existing and construction of new water mains and facilities. Objects and Subjects are over 350 and are determined after regional pre-investment research. "VIK" Ltd. - Rousse has already submitted the first project proposal for financing under the Operational Program ahead of schedule. The deadline for submitting projects to the Ministry of Environment and Water is April 23, 2019.

Under the Operational Program "Environment 2007 - 2013", 51 treatment plants and over 2500 km of water and sewerage network were built.

The data show that for the first time in the last years the water supply and sewerage sector has been brought to one of the main priorities in the country, since for almost 30 years before it has been made no investments except for emergency repairs. The water supply and sewerage networks on the territory of the country have a length of more than 90 000 km, and a huge financial resource is needed to bring them into good working order.
