PM Dancila: As Romania's first female prime minister, I understand my immense responsibility

In a message on March 8, the International Women's Day, Romania's Prime Minister Viorica Dancila says that as Romania's the first ever female prime minister, she understands her immense responsibility, especially in promoting women's rights in all areas of social life. "As the first female prime minister of Romania, I understand the immense responsibility I have towards citizens, especially when it comes to promoting women's rights in all areas of social life, whether we refer to education, entrepreneurship or labour market. We focused on increasing women's economic independence, a major objective of our Presidency at the Council of the European Union, on promoting women in all spheres of social life, including to political positions at the highest level," Dancila is quoted as saying in a press statement released by the Romanian Government. According to the PM, her governmental team is the first in the last 30 years to promote a distinct chapter in the governance programme, complete with measures that generate a change in thinking about and acting on the condition of all women in Romania, along with a national programme to combat violence against women and domestic violence. "One of the main priorities of our government is the harmonisation of national legislation with the provisions of the Istanbul Convention. At the same time, we and Parliament have promoted important regulations for preventing and combating abuses and ill-treatment, and a series of projects to protect victims of domestic violence, at government level," says Dancila. She points out that, besides the above-mentioned projects, emphasis will be placed on education, information and guidance, so that gender equality may become a reality.
