Hague Prosecutors to Quiz Kosovo Guerrillas’ Wartime Doctor

Hysni Gucati, the head of the Kosovo Liberation Army War Veterans' Organisation, confirmed on Tuesday that former KLA doctor Fadil Beka has been asked to give an interview to the Hague-based Kosovo Specialist Prosecution.

"I am informed that one of the best doctors from the war and a KLA member, Fadil Beka, has been invited [for interview] by the Specialist Court. I told him [Beka] to feel proud about yourself about your activity during and after the war and your contribution to Kosovo's state-building," Gucati wrote on Facebook.

"We will always be on your side, defending the values of the war. Nobody can tarnish the KLA's war," Gucati added.

Beka, 57, has served as a doctor during Kosovo 1998-1999 war. After the war, Beka served as director of the Kosovo University Clinical Centre and was also an MP with the Democratic Party of Kosovo, PDK for two mandates. He was also in the PDK candidates' list for the recent snap elections on October 6, the results of which are yet to be announced.

Since last year, the Specialist Prosecutor's Office has interviewed around 40 former KLA fighters, including several others who are also high-profile politicians. Many have said they wanted to prove to the prosecutors that the KLA's war against Serbian forces was legitimate and 'clean'.

Kosovo's Prime Minister Ramush Haradinaj resigned in July after being asked to give an interview to the prosecutors as a suspect.

The Specialist Prosecutor's Office is tasked with probing killings, abductions, illegal detentions, sexual violence and other crimes allegedly committed by KLA members from the beginning of 1998 to the end of 1999.

The Hague-based Kosovo Specialist Chambers is expected to try those indicted by the prosecutors. No indictments have...
