Bosnian Serb Ex-Commander Arrested for Prisoner Abuse, Killings

Bosnia's State Investigation and Protection Agency arrested Miladin Trifunovic on Wednesday on suspicion that he was responsible for the abuse and killing of Bosniak detainees in the Vogosca and Ilijas areas during wartime in 1992.

"He is suspected, in his capacity as commander of the Vogosca Brigade of the Bosnian Serb Army, of being responsible for murders and loss of life, as well as the physical and mental abuse of a number of people who were unlawfully detained at the so-called Planjina Kuca facility in the village of Svrake," the state prosecution said in an announcement.

According to the prosecution, the detainees were used as human shields and taken to front lines in combat zones in order to do forced labour, which resulted in the murder of at least 20 people, the wounding of at least 20 more, and the abuse of several dozen.

Trifunovic was arrested in the Sokolac area and will be handed over to a prosecutor for questioning.
