Croatian Educators Protest Demanding Higher Salaries

They walked in a procession in the centre of Zagreb, ending in front of the government building, where protest organisers and union representatives made speeches.

"You have no right to give up the fight for our dignity and for the status of our profession," Sanja Sprem, head of the Union of Croatian Teachers, told protesters.

The date of the rally symbolises the rise in the wage index that they are demanding, which is 6.11 per cent.

Meanwhile, a teachers' strike in schools continued for the 19th day. The strike is called a "rotating" protest, since each day it is staged in three different counties. On Wednesday, teachers went on strike in all schools in the country. Universities also joined them.

The unions insisted on a protest, although they held a consultative meeting with relevant ministers on Tuesday. A final offer from the government to the unions is expected on Monday.
